and Research
SONAR is committed to gathering, fostering, and funding research covering all topics that affect obstetric anesthesiology that is effective and useful in the clinical setting.
Background
Maternal care is one of the basic physiological needs we can not disregard, cancel, close, or downgrade like many small and medium hospitals are forced to do lately due to financial strains. It is a universal service regardless if obstetric care is provided in a facility; parturients will receive urgent or emergency care when needed.
Nurse Anesthesiology providers are "the primary providers of anesthesia care in rural settings and have been instrumental in delivering care during the pandemic to patients where they live and when they need it," said AANA President Angela Mund, DNP, CRNA.
SONAR is a consortium of obstetric nurse anesthesiology professionals who deliver anesthesia care to mothers nationwide. SONAR's mission is to enhance women's health through education and research and to maintain the integrity of the profession of nurse anesthesiology.
Why?
A dearth of information exists in the literature related to obstetric anesthesia provider scope of practice and care provision across the country within obstetric units. Finding out the specifics about who we are as CRNAs caring for parturients is vital information. When funding, policy, and most importantly, standards of care, are driven by presumption rather than evidence, it is mothers who pay the price. CRNAs in obstetric care are passionate, compassionate, and give expert care in our experience. This project will determine to what extent that is true within the United States and clarify our role. This evidence will be vital in ensuring that obstetric units have standards that give them access to the best obstetric anesthesia care possible.
What is next?
The SONAR Leadership, Research Committee, and collaborators continue designing, funding, and implementing the "Who We Are Project."
We thank so much to our SONAR members, supporters, and obstetric nurse anesthesiologists all over the country.
